PROFILE: The Leader & State Register circulates to Laurel, Seaford and southwestern Sussex County, a land of historic towns, farms and scenic natural areas. Seaford, the Nations' Nylon Capital thanks to the DuPont Co. plant there, is rapidly growing a diversified economy, based on its central geographic location and the navigable Nanticoke River. As the economic capital of Western Sussex County, Seaford is a retail and service center with as expanding manufacturing base. Seaford's expanding retail market includes a new WalMart Super Store, supporting the fact that this town is a shopping destination for the county and nearby Dorchester and Caroline counties in Maryland. Laurel, Seaford's neighbor to the south, is a retail center of charming Victorian homes and tree-lined streets. The western Sussex country area is within an easy two-hour drive to Baltimore, Washington D.C. and Philadelphia. Even closer, though, are the Maryland towns of Cambridge (61 miles), Ocean City (44 miles) and Salisbury (16 miles), making Laurel and Seaford an easy place to do some tax-free shopping in Delaware. The Leader & State Register is the place the community turns to for local news, including town and city council meetings, business information, community events, local sports, viewpoints and advertising. Our Purpose… The Leader & State Register is published by a unique trust that enables this newspaper to pursue a mission of journalistic service to the citizens of the community. Since no dividends are paid, the company is able to thrive on profit margins below industry standards. All after-tax surpluses are reinvested in Independent’s mission of journalistic service, commitment to the ideals of the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, and support of the community’s deliberation of public issues. |
